The Iquitos Cross is handmade from the Blood Wood of the Amazon Rainforest. They measure approximately 1.5" tall and .75" wide. The crosses are made by Freddy, a resident of Iquitos, Peru. Freddy is bi-lingual, full of energy, and has a story to tell. The only means Freddy has to support himself and his mother is to sell jewelry to the tourists. While on his rounds, he talks with the Street Children and gives them support, advice, and many times money (as much as he can spare). One of the main products he sells is the Iquitos Cross.
Growing up Freddy was one of the Street Children, now he helps other Street Children learn to support themselves. He works to reduce teen pregnancy, increase the health of the children and has set up programs for the local restaurants to provide left over food for them. Freddy is in his mid twenties and is a person who brings "life" to the people around him. He is constantly laughing, joking, and playing tricks!
Sales of the crosses help provide support for Freddy and the Street Children of Iquito, Peru. Iquitos has a population of nearly 150,000 people directly along side the Amazon River and is north east of Lima approximately 700 miles.
